It's a date!
Next year's Women's Hall of Fame (WHOF) Scholarship and Awards Luncheon is now less than a year away!  Spring has sprung, summer will come...and in the fall and winter, we'll be planning our 30th Annual WHOF.  Suzi Oppenheimer, our 2013 Hall of Fame recipient, will present the coveted "medallion" of honor to next year's winner.  View our 2013 WHOF program and fabulous photos -- and in the coming month's, keep next March  -- and how you can help, in your heart!

"Spring has sprung"  ...and it's only weeks until our first "Stand Up for Women Veterans" event.  Join us in June, at Westchester Community College.  Thanks to L.I.V.E. -- Lanza Family Investment in Veteran's Empowerment -- and the generous support of all of our sponsors, the line up is impressive, and we hope to see you there...  View the flyer (pdf) for more detail.  And, visit the Family Services of Westchester web for information on veterans outreach and support.

The Mission of WREF

The WREF is a not-for-profit corporation (Tax Exempt #13-3568614) in New York State that is based in Westchester County.  The specific principal purpose for which the WREF exists is educational.  It accumulates studies, analyzes and distributes information concerning the present and future status of women.  It promotes the interest of women nationally with particular emphasis on the women and children of Westchester County. It  encourages, and assists women to develop through education and training, their skills and talents.  Further, it works to eliminate prejudice and discrimination against women because of their sex and promotes safety of victims and families.

WREF studies and collects information about women, seeks recognition of the accomplishments and contributions of women and informs and educates people about the rights, concerns, problems and contributions of women.  WREF accomplishes its goals primarily through the funding of programs primarily in the community of Westchester County. It has funded programs in other geographic areas. WREF raises funds from various resources such as other Foundations and Funds and holds fund raising events. After an assessment of need, WREF gives grants to agencies and organizations to meet the needs of the women's community

Although WREF will co-sponsor programs with various government and not-for-profit agencies, it has no direct relationship with government or these agencies.  It also co-sponsors programs with schools and social agencies.  Members of the Board of Directors are: Janet A. Johnson, President; Sister Mary Ross, Secretary, Evelyn Stock, Treasurer and Camille Failla Murphy Executive Director.

Domestic Violence

WREF is committed to funding programs whose aim is to eradicate domestic violence. To this end, it applied for and received a grant from the Avon Foundation for the Avon  Empowerment Self-Sufficiency Program.  (Out of  over 150 applications throughout the nation, WREF was one of 32 winners). WREF sub-contracted the grant to My Sisters Place to run the program out of the Family Justice Center which is located in the White Plains Court Complex.

Under this grant, women who are victims of domestic violence are eligible for a variety of services providing them with guidance and assistance to create independent, violence-free lives.
